How to fix a floating mouse pointer
Posted by admin on 09/3/06 in Computers
Recently my Dell Latitude Model PP010 surprised and confused me with a new problem. Without provocation my cursor started to float (drift). After checking at control panel, mouse, etc.
I could not find a solution to the problem.
Off to Google and much to my initial relief, numerous solution sites appeared. I must have read 30 pages. Suggestions ranged from, “SLAP TOP OF UNITâ€, To, “OPEN AND CUT CERTAIN WIRESâ€. None of these were acceptible.
Until Voila:
#1 How to test to determine whether this is your problem.
#2 Finally a rather simple solution to this common dilemma.
Press down about one inch to the right of your touchpad. If this makes the mouse start wandering then this fix is the right one for you.
On the dell c600 in order to gain access to the track pad it is necessary to remove the screen portion completely and the entire upper portion of the laptop casing (remember to take out the hard drive and remove the two small screws inside that hold the base to the palmrest).
The problem is caused by a metal bridge that crosses over the underside of the touch pad. When leaning on the palm rest the metal bridge can come in contact with the touch pad.
To fix the problem, shield the bridge by inserting a small piece of thin plastic lining between the metal bridge and the touch pad itself.
After positioning the plastic, replace the metal support bar with the 4 screws that hold it in place, then re-assemble the laptop.
This fixed the mouse drift problem for me and I finally have control of my cursor again.
